Corner radius analysis: find sharp corners and tight fillets

PartCheck finds every inside corner of your part, colours it by its fillet radius, and marks the corners that have no fillet at all. Check them against the radius you want, or against the cutter that has to make them. Free, in your browser, nothing uploaded.

What it helps you catch

  • Sharp inside corners — where a moulded part cracks under load, plastic flows badly, and a rotating cutter cannot reach at all.
  • Fillets too tight for the smallest cutter a machinist wants to use, which means a smaller tool, a slower job, or a corner that comes out bigger than drawn.
  • Inconsistent radii — the one corner modelled at R0.5 among dozens at R2.
  • Outside rounds, which become inside corners in the steel of a mould.

What you see

Coloured corners

Each filleted corner coloured by its radius: red where it is tight, blue where it is generous. Faces that are not corners stay grey.

Sharp corners

Corners with no fillet at all, drawn as lines of their own colour along the edge.

How to use it

  1. 1

Open your part and pick Corners

Drop a STEP file on the page, choose Analyze, then the Corners map.

  2. 2

    Choose which corners

Internal (the default) for inside corners, External for outside rounds, or Both.

  3. 3

Read it as a machinist would

Set Direction to the axis the cutter comes down. The map then keeps the corners a cutter works along, and tells you the largest cutter that fits every one of them.

  4. 4

    Check against a target

Turn on Target Radius and choose Show Tighter or Show Larger. Corners that meet it turn dark grey, and only the ones that miss stay coloured.

Good to know

The corners are read from the faces in your STEP file, so the map needs a STEP file rather than a mesh. On a freeform or sculpted part, where few faces are simple shapes, PartCheck says it cannot measure the corners rather than guess. For a full check against moulding or machining rules, corners included, run the injection moulding or CNC DFM check, whose report lists them.

Questions

What radius should inside corners have?

For a moulded part, a common rule is at least half the wall thickness. For a machined part, at least the radius of the cutter that will make it — and a little more lets the cutter turn the corner without slowing down.

Why are most of my part’s faces grey?

Grey is everything that is not a corner — most of any part. Only the fillets and sharp corners are coloured.

Can it check outside edges?

Yes: set the side to External or Both. Sharp outside edges are not marked, since nearly every edge of a machined part is one.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It runs in your browser, free, with no account.

Try it on a real part

The demo is a moulded enclosure lid in two revisions, drawn in CAD. It opens in the tool with no files needed — or open your own STEP files. Nothing is uploaded: the analysis runs in your browser.
